A Message of Condolence to the Fraenkel, Shaar, Yifrach, and Khdeir Families We extend our deepest condolences to the families of kidnapped and murdered Israeli teenagers Naftali Fraenkel, Gilad Shaar and Eyal Yifrach, and young Arab teenager, Muhammad Abu Khdeir. In the midst of Rachel Fraenkel’s terrible grief over the sudden and horrifying death of her son, she showed to all of the world what it means to truly believe that all of us are the same at our core. She demonstrated the kind of morality it will take to bring peace in every troubled area of the world, releasing a statement upon learning of the young Arab, Abu Khdeir’s, kidnapping and murder in East Jerusalem in which she talked about the sacredness of life—everyone’s life. This is Ubuntu. Archbishop Tutu tells us that “A person with Ubuntu is open and available to others, affirming of others, does not feel threatened that others are able and good, based from a proper self-assurance that comes from knowing that he or she belongs in a greater whole and is diminished when others are humiliated or diminished, when others are tortured or oppressed.” Ubuntu is about our humanness, our collective responsibilities, about “I am because we are.” May these terrible losses end, because each of us, whatever our spiritual beliefs may be, whatever our culture may be, is connected to one another because of our humanness. In these last few days, each of us living in the world has been diminished by these tragic, violent deaths.
