A Mikado Crosses the Animas: Durango & Silverton 2-8-2 K-28 Mikado #473 crosses the Animas River north of Durango, Colorado, on 1st September 2003. (While still carrying a fake Diamond stack and Bumble-Bee yellow livery.) The ten K-28 locos were introduced on the Denver & Rio Grande Western in 1923 as a larger and improved version of the earlier K-27 2-8-2 locomotives. Only three of this class survive today (the others being Nos.476 and 478), all on the preserved section of the D&RGW known as the Durango and Silverton Narrow Gauge Railroad.
