A Million Dollar View This was taken back during my last sunset - TopicsExpress

A Million Dollar View This was taken back during my last sunset in Sydney back in January. The entire stretch along Mrs Macquaries point was a few hundred metres long, and you couldve taken this panorama from pretty much anywhere along the stretch, However, being picky about the composition, I had to shoot from this part where the Opera House completely blocked out one of the towers of the Harbour Bridge. To my surprise, I had to share the spot with two other photographers, one old guy possibly in his 60s, and a younger guy probably in his late 20s. The younger chap had only just picked up photography, and looked pretty serious with some top notch gear. However, the older guy was using something like a rangefinder and light meter with a whole bunch of filters, and took his own sweet time to snap. Perhaps he saw that I didnt have any elaborate slot-in filter system in front of my lens, and proceeded to teach me about the use of ND filters. You need to get yourself a set of gradual neutral density filters to control the light, mate. Otherwise the sky is gonna be too bright and your foreground is going to be too dark. When I explained that my method mainly involves the use of layers in Photoshop, and how Ive already gotten the best of the sunset light through a bracket of images shot at various exposures, and was now waiting for the city lights to come on so that I could blend those into the sunset shots, a hint of disgust began to show on his hairy face.
