A NEW LOCAL ORGANIC BRAND Organic farmers in Barbados will soon be operating under the local brand Certified Organic. The Organic Growers Consumers Association has launched a project which will see ten people trained as organic food inspectors. John Hunte, from the association said the ten will be trained in current methods which determine if produce is truly organic. Support has come from several agencies including IICA, the Barbados Standards Institute, the Barbados Association of Non-governmental Organisations, the Bellairs Institute and the UNDP. Mr. Hunte was speaking before receving a fifty thousand US dollar cheque from National Coordinator for the UNDP’S Small Grants Programe, David Bynoe. Mr. Hunte said not only will the programme improve the skills of its members it will also facilitate more women growers. IICA representative Ena Harvey says organic farming is a multi-million dollar industry that Barbados can tap into.
