A NEW PARADIGM FOR ADOPTION - BEYOND OPENNESS Over the past - TopicsExpress

A NEW PARADIGM FOR ADOPTION - BEYOND OPENNESS Over the past twenty years the face of adoption has changed dramatically. The old paradigms about adoption have shifted and notions that were once considered normal and optimal have gone through a transformation. The question for us at Adoption Center of Illinois is no longer one of “Open vs. Closed” adoption, but rather a complete paradigm shift. What we see taking place is a new understanding of the meaning of adoption and its implications for what the concept of “family” means when someone in their extended family network is adopted. In this Adoption Journal entry, Jennifer, an adoptive mother talks about her daughters birth family and how she sees her daughters original family as part of her extended family network. What Jennifer is discussing represents leading edge thinking in the field of adoption and clearly moves the needle of understanding beyond openness.” Also included are photographs of her daughter, Naomi, meeting her biological brother for the first time this past summer.
