A Nigerian medical doctor, Basil Fadipe, has received the European Society for Quality Research award. In a statement by the organisation, the award is in recognition of his efforts in establishing The Justin Fadipe Medical Centre, Mero, the Dominican Island and his strides in quality research. The Justin Medical Centre, named in honour of the doctor’s father, is celebrated, according to the organisers, for its “excellence, innovation, visionary thinking and the spread of knowledge.” According to them, the centre is recognised for extraordinary achievement in quality management.” The acknowledgement and recognition of hard work was not only for him but by for his members of staff. Fadipe, who teaches clinical medicine and anatomy at the Ross University School of Medicine, Dominican Island, explained that the new medical centre would complement and augment the level of medical care in the area. “It is set up to ensure that within the island, all that is possible from the point of view of medical care can be offered without having to venture outside the shores. Even if there is a case that cannot be done by personnel within the hospital there will be people who can come around into the hospital to offer their expertise,” he noted. At the award ceremony in Kensington, London, United Kingdom, the physician said he was moved by the “immense support” of his clients who, along with his love for the 289 square mile Caribbean island, inspired him to embark on the venture. Fadipe said, “I’m almost moved to tears. I’m very appreciative of the immense support that most of my patients have given me. The motivation for coming out with this project, apart from the love of the island, is the love for the very patients who in difficult times have seen it worthy to stand by me,” he told his audience during the one-hour ceremony. Former Medical Director, Princess Margaret Hospital, Prof. Gerald Grell, paid a tribute to Fadipe for his “highest possible quality of care” to the hospital. “I think Dr. Fadipe is a remarkable man in many, many ways. When I was medical Director with the hospital he was one of the hospital’s specialist staff who I could always rely on to ensure that the highest possible quality of care was available. His services in the hospital to his patients were of the highest quality,” said the medical practitioner. Architect and client of Fadipe, Severin McKenzie, who gave a brief outline of the facility said, “It will be a small hospital which will have two wards – one male, one female – with private sanitary facilities, one theatre, there is also a room for Ondoscopy, a reception area and different rooms for examinations, and the facilities relating to a modern theatre project.” The island’s Minister of Industry, Physical Planning and Enterprise Development, Ambrose George, revealed that the new establishment would be the first to benefit from the government’s “special incentive package” that was announced last July. “I did make a statement inviting the private sector to come forward especially those in the service industry, the productive sector and on presentation of their proposals the government would offer special incentive packages to such enterprises. Being the first to respond to such a call, government will accede to your request for special incentive package,” said George. The project, designed by Dominica-based African architect David Onipede, is scheduled to begin in a few days time with an excavation phase. The Justin Fadipe Hospital is expected to become operational in July.
