A PS on Julias post: One way you can reinforce proper grammar is to play a circle story game. Each person (2or more) adds a new sentence onto the story. You could even make it so you have to repeat the entire story each round. This is great for practicing past tense, but also good (ages 6 or older) for conditionals (like: if it rains tomorrow, we will watch a movie; if we watch a movie, Ill choose Frozen; if you choose Frozen, Ill make popcorn...) Anyway, make it fun! One more great activity is tool do timed writing, once your child is writing fairly confidently. Just have them write for 3 (or 5, or 10) minutes (depending on the age). Do NOT make any corrections!!!! Just count the number of words, calculate the words per minute and put it on a chart. Both fluency and accuracy will NATURALLY improve if you and your child are doing reading together! Your childs confidence will totally totally increase as they see their score going up over time! This is based on research. Does anyone else have games/activities to share?
