A Parent sent us an update: Good Morning, My daughter Lily came - TopicsExpress

A Parent sent us an update: Good Morning, My daughter Lily came to you for an initial assessment in late June. She received the films and had been using them all summer until we got in for the lens screening in August. The films definitely helped her, but the lenses have been life changing. She has both reading and non-prescription Irlen lenses. She received her full time glasses in mid-October. I posted the two pictures that I have attached on facebook as well, so you may have already seen them. They are before and after entries in her school agenda book. The entries in the pictures are literally days apart. In addition to her reading and confidence being improved, I have noticed many other changes for her. Since she got the glasses, she comes home from school and we sit and do all her homework in one sitting. She actually sits and plays Minecraft for more than 5 minutes at a time. She goes to sleep at night. It used to be about 45 minutes before she would be able to lay still enough to go to sleep. It is now 5 to 10 minutes on most nights. So basically her brain is not in overload all the time. In her words I dont feel all squirrelly inside anymore. We had a meeting with the Occupational Therapist at school to review the testing they did at the beginning of the school year. The meeting just happened to coincide with the weeks end that she started wearing the glasses all the time. I didnt tell her teachers that she had new glasses & without knowing that, they told me they noticed a difference in her ability to focus and organize her work during that week. The testing they did was with her wearing the prescription Irlen lenses because that is all she had at the time. General assessment Like night & day from the testing they did last year. The OT thought for sure she was going to be working with Lily after reading last years report. She reported that was not the case. An average range is from 90 to 110, she scored 105. The OT, and both her class room teachers said The glasses are definitely the trick for her. I do have their support as well as that of the new VP at our school. That is awesome. What I want to do next is try to get in there and help other kids that may be affected. I am not quite sure how to go about it. I was wondering if there was a standard slide presentation and/or video about Iren that I could use to try and get something going in our school system. I would like to go to the VP and request an opportunity to present information to him to get something started. If you have another suggestions, I am all ears. I actually purchased a set of films with literature from the Irlen website. I have passed them to a few people I know who expressed interested in learning more about Irlen because of all the facebook posts! They are friends who think perhaps their kids are affected. The issue for a few of them is the cost of the screening. I would love to hear about any resources available to people who dont have the means to pay for screening or lenses. It would be awesome if someday, the health insurance would cover it, but I suspect that is a ways off. I cant thank you enough for the difference that you have made for Lily and for me. I look forward to hearing any suggestions that you have. Take Care, Kelly Photos; #1 after / #2 Before --- WOW!!!
