“A Pause On Walden’s Ridge” Proverbs 1:7-9 “7. The fear of the LORD is the beginning of knowledge: but fools despise wisdom and instruction. 8.My son, hear the instruction of thy father, and forsake not the law of thy mother: 9. For they shall be an ornament of grace unto thy head, and chains about thy neck.” Walden’s Ridge was not a place of wealth or material things. People worked hard in the mines and on the farms, but living was hard. There was not a lot of time for Church, but faith was still strong. The Mothers and Grandmothers made sure that all of the children and grandchildren were taught to pray, sing “Jesus loves me” and the blessing before they ate. I can remember all of the world stopping as we sat down to eat Sunday dinner and gave thanks for what we killed on Saturday. God provided another meal up on the mountain. Everyone knew when it was time to pray, and when one of the elders did, time stopped. For the longest time and the only time while my Mother was a child, the only encounter with Church was a Presbyterian Missionary and his wife. He rode a mule and went from place to place. He tried to meet the needs of the desperate Appalachian poor and his wife concentrated on helping the children. I remember being told my family did not know what a toothbrush was until she gave them one and taught them to use it. They had used brushes made roots of sassafras trees. My Mother had never received a Christmas present until the Missionary’s wife gave her one. It was a baby doll, and it too was the first one she ever had. But through the hardships, they all existed. They gave thanks for little and formed a bond of family that you never see anymore. I remember when food was only given to the men and boys, because they had to work in the fields and mines. The Mothers and daughters simply waited until there was enough for all. I wonder how that would work today? With the help of a Missionary couple on mules, the mountain families existed and learned two of the basic fundamentals of a Godly life and existence. #1. Fear The LORD And Give Him Reverence #2. Honor Your Father And Mother And Listen To What They Say OKAY FOLKS, THERE IS A PAUSE HERE…….I’LL FINISH THIS ONE AFTER WHILE. I’VE GOT TO GET UP AND GO TO CHURCH. WILL I SEE YOU THERE? LOVE YOU LOTS…….Pastor Brion
