A Philosophical Musing – 2013 As we reach our golden years, we sometimes think about that forbidden subject, shhhh...death. It seems, in some ways, to be a morbid thing to think about. Throughout my life, I have occasionally thought about it, just as all of you undoubtedly have. During the night of Christmas eve, 1996, I had a series of heart attacks. During one of these incidents, I experienced a near-death episode, which had a profound effect upon me. It was decided by the medical staff that I be given a nitroglycerin tablet. When it had no effect on me, I was given another tablet. My blood pressure suddenly dropped to zero! I was unable to move, or speak. However, I could still see, and was completely aware of what was going on around me. The medical staff was caught by total surprise and was running around in a quasi-panic trying to figure out what to do. As all of this was transpiring, my vision was slowly fading to a small circle of light. Behold, the light at the end of the tunnel! I thought, “My gosh, I’m actually dying! I remember thinking that my family would have my life insurance to tide them over for awhile, so they would be fine, financially. I was completely at peace and decided it was OK to die. After what seemed to be an eternity, I began to come out of it. My blood pressure began rising and soon returned to normal and I was able to move again! The medical staff had done absolutely nothing to help! After I had returned to normal, I sat up and told the staff, “Hi, I’m back!”. It scared the daylight out of them. This experience taught me that I am not afraid to die, just how I might do it is a little bit frightening. I am not afraid to die...I’m just not ready, yet! I have too many projects to finish, and I can’t die until they are done. The answer to this conundrum, therefore, must be to procrastinate. The more I procrastinate on these projects, the longer I’ll live! Thomas Marquis
