A Poem by Carlos Contreras (Today is your last day to submit YOUR poem to Protect and Serve ABQ. Message their FB wall or e-mail to protectserveabq@gmail): Here is my contribution. An honest.. open letter to our Mayor. It is written with respect, and frustration, all at once. We are in this together - we must protect one another, but some of us chose to do so as a job - protect and serve. These are my humble honest words. With All Due Respect ______________________ With all due respect, Mr. Mayor, Our lives are not a “game.” our races, aren’t run in the fashion of winning or losing a seat, bur rather a life, when we feel like out of water fish, running up stream in a situation of hungry wolves and bears bearing down upon the streets they stalk. Listen - I’ve felt the fear, and still do, when it climbs up my neck tingles at my finger tips, and ripples down my spine, and that’s simply when I see the outline of lights in my rearview, day or night. Why? That’s a wonderful question, part of the answer remains engrained in a memory of a new year, gone wrong. Was I in the right? No - Was I a threat? No. Am I forever affected, yes. Alive, yes. But the reality is, Mr. Mayor, Not all of us were so lucky. I know words can be taken out of context - However, one would imagine, you do too. I’m sure disrespect wasn’t intended in calling Mr. Boyd’s life a “game changer.” But nevertheless, I believe we’ve all begun to realize that Albuquerque’s citizens are done playing… either way. All we want is safety - A right to feel protected. Please. And yes, I understand it’s certainly not a one-man job, but we are here, for that reason. At a point in which things can collectively change, and we can reclaim our city: beautifully safe, and scared. -Carlos C
