A Pure Democracy The government of most tribes was a true democracy. Long council meetings allowed a forum for many speakers and continued until a consensus was achieved. Those who did not agree with the decisions were free to leave and form their own band. Chiefs had a prestige only to the extent they demonstrated bravery and honor. Every person considered the impact of their decisions on future generations. The phrase, “The Seventh Generation,” is based upon the traditional Indian teachings that actions of today will affect the future, up to and including the 7th generation to come.
