A QUESTION ONLY FOR THE HEART [201] Where are the cooling waters of life to be found? Where should we go to get this eternal liquid? We must know or die. Please keep away from me all repeating, heady and doctrinal answers; they are not satisfying my need to actually drink. Don’t tell me to go to a memorised verse in the bible; it remains just ink on paper. Scripture sought deeply and treated as God, but the unwillingness to drink and go to the fountain and subject of the book hardens the heart still further. I need the tree of life; I need his love deep inside my broken sinful vessel. O stay away from me all external answers of brick and mortar. Majestic buildings don’t invite me to eat, as if you were the kingdom. I can’t eat your self-righteous, ascending and external projects. The grit hurts my teeth and makes my stomach sick. Your Babylonian type palaces just remind me how thirsty I am inside. Don’t lead me to the self-appointed gatekeeper who tickles ears with fascinating talks. Sailing across the stage like a peacock, he struts above all. The self-assurance he has of who to let in and who to leave out perfectly complimented by the cut of his suit. His face turns sour in front of me and my depths scream that he is not the answer. I can’t eat him, I won’t worship him by following him, and he won’t live in me. My soul is in the mud, who will sit there with me? Why should they even want to join me here in this broken place as I ask for the priceless gift of life? There he is, so gentle and unassertive, so humble, with no judgment and no whip to punish me, I turn and see his smiling face. “Jesus you came as a man, how dirty your cross was with mud and blood, how they laughed at you till their stomachs hurt and tears flowed down their face. You want to fill me from the inside, live in me and give me eternal life. Lord if I were at the cross I might have mocked you too.” But his loving gaze just smiles with forgiveness and acceptance as I feel the waters begin to bubble
