A QUESTION TO WALKERS ‘Phil Smith’ writes: Tina Richardson has floated the idea that a “new psychogeography” has emerged over the last few years. I have been considering a similar possibility for a long piece of writing on contemporary developments in walking that I hope to get public later this year. My ‘hunch’ is that many of you out there using walking in some part of your practice – walking arts, urban exploration, walking and writing, walking activism, mythogeography, etc. – are aware of some aspect/s of psychogeography (that might be anything from the ‘drifts’ and theories of the International Lettristes and situationists to the writings of Iain Sinclair and the ‘occult’ psychogeography of Alan Moore’s comics, or just hearing about the idea of it) and, while not necessarily calling yourselves ‘psychogeographers’ your walking has been positively influenced, informed or inspired by it. Is that about right?
