A Remembrance Day poem written by my daughter, Dini Antonia: Discovering the Absence Amsterdam, Nijmegen, Leiden, Windmills in these great cities blistered Their tulips bleached of all color Pinks, reds, purples, grey with peppered ash, smoldering with the dull polish of bullet shells And people caterwauled as war submerged them viciously, Their eyes choking on blood A boy amongst this crowd, aged eleven and no longer innocent, hid his head in his hands struggling with the voices that rattled his brain which echoed, “There is no hope” “There is no hope” “There is no hope” Fires raged and raged incinerating till black smoke blocked the sun Charred lives Broken, fragmented souls Lie in wake of burnt buildings that toppled uselessly at the touch of one finger The aftermath Storm clouds had cast above Thunder, lightning, in the distance, The smell of rain in the atmosphere Canadian soldiers landed As water burst from the sky, streaming, Splatters embracing the ragged ground, Dousing, And drenching, Snuffing out the breath of despair They advanced through staggering amounts of mud formed from their surge, the mud devouring their heavy boots And they gripped their gleaming guns in determination to quench the thirst of the nation that had been so deprived of life, of desire, of passion, of love Their flag etched with pride in their hearts The boy gazed up at the stars, a whole world away, The boy discovered In the absence “There is hope” ~Dini.A
