A SELFLESS LEADER WORTH EMULATING Prof Doknan Danjuma Decent Sheni Plateau State University,Bokkos Education -Professor Sheni completed his WASC at Government College Keffi 1973. -Professor D.D.D. Sheni graduated in Optometry in 1971 with a B.Sc. Optometry at University of Benin, Benin City. * First African to receive a Ph. D in Optometry 1984 In 1981 & 1984 he obtained his Masters & Ph.D degrees in Optometry respectively. * Professor D.D.D. Sheni invented an instrument to measure fusion limits,for which he obtained a Canadian patent 1984 In 1981, professor passed the examinations to become a Fellow of the American Academy of Optometry (FAAO). * Professor Sheni is also a Fellow of the South African Optometry Association (FOA),1996.Fellow Nigerian Optometry Association (FNOA) 1988 & Fellow of the Nigerian College of Optometry (FNCO) 1999 He has published several referred papers in international acclaimed journals. He presented many papers at international conferences in many countries in North America, Europe,Middle East,Asia pacific, India,Latin America and Africa. * Professor Sheni has published two book manuscripts,one on Clinical Optometry titled “Diagnostic Optometry” & the other on binocular vision titled “Binocular Vision:Diagnostic procedures & workbook. * Professor Sheni has published two religious books “Destroying & Building a new Foundation” 2011.& “The Seven hearts of men” 2007. * Professor Sheni has lectured in two universities in Nigeria,one in Saudi Arabia and in South Africa. 1979 –1992,Uniben,1987-1988. IMO State University. * Professor Sheni has more than 30years experience in lecturing at University level. * Professor Sheni is completing the Advanced health Management Course(AHMP 2011-2012) with Yale University,facilitated by Foundation for Professional Development (FPD),Pretoria.University of the North/Limpopo * Professor Sheni served the University as,Dean, Research & Development 1999-2001 Dean, Faculty of Health Sciences, 1997-1999 * Head of Optometry Development, 1995-1997,2005-2008 Member, Welfare & Head Education consortium (WHEV) of Limpopo province 1997 Director,Thousano School of Public Health (TSPH) 1998-1999 Member,Eye Caresteering Committee,Limpopo province 1996-2000 * Professor Sheni established linkages between the University of the North South Africa & USA Universities including,Howard University,Washington;Pennsylvania College of Optometry,& University of Houston College of Optometry 1998. * Member of Senate & various University Committees.& 1995-2012 * He enhanced the community service of the department to several rural communities in Limpopo Province 1995 to date. Motivated for an ensured the creation of public service positions in hospitals for Optometist in Northern/Limpopo province 1966 Was instrumental in establishing final year Optometry students training hospitals in the province 2005 to 2012. In South Africa. Professor Sheni Served as member of the SAOA board,1998-2000 Served as chair SAOA education committee 1999-2000 First Special Olympics Clinical Director in SA 1999 In March 2003, the South African Optometric Association presented Professor Sheni with a certificate of Tribute in recognition of his services to Optometry in South Africa. In 2005 SAOA award Professor Sheni the Distinguish Service award for exemplary leadership & service to Optometry. In 2007, SAOA awarded Professor Sheni Honorary Life membership of the association. Professor Sheni is the Senior Pastor,Shalom Christian Mission International Polokwane South Africa, 2003 to 2012. In Nigeria,University of Benin, Professor Sheni Served as acting Head of Optometry Department at University of Benin 1989-1992 Project Manger River Blindness Foundation to Owan Local Government,Edo State,1990-1992 Served in faculty and Senate of University of Benin 1989-1992 Served as a member of the national prevention Blindness Committee 1989-1992 Received award (tribute) from Ponzhi Tarok as one of the distinguished Tarok sons 2002 Served as Vice-Chancellor Nigerian Optometric Association,1985-1986. * In Africa Professor Sheni Was Africa’s representative on the Governing Board of World Council of Optometry (WCO) for several years (1995-2002) He was the President-elect of the World Council of Optometry from 2002 to 2004. He was the President, Association of African Optometric Educators (AAOE), 1990-1994. Professor Sheni was the first elected President of AFCON (1998-2000). Professor Sheni was the Vice-President,International Association of Contact Lens Educators (IACLE) African region 1992-1999. 1990-1994,member,West African Technical Committee on Prevention of Blindness. Professor Sheni was external moderator to (sponsor by the Association of African Universities AAU) the University of Science & Technology,Kumasi Ghana 1996-1998. Played a pivotal role in establishing the Optometry schools at Universities of Cape Coast Ghana, & UST,Kumasi 1990. Was the key person to establishing the Doctor of Optometry Programme,OD,in Nigeria 1988/1989. Was the recipient of AFCO Africa Ambassadorial Award. Project Director River Blindness Foundation 1989-1992. * Professor Sheni is the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) for Africa Aids Foundation. Internationally,Professor Sheni Was the President of the World Council of Optometry (first African and Black to hold the position) 2004-2006. Was Member of the board of Trustees of the International Agency for the prevention of Blindness {IAPB} 2006 Was Chairman Education Committee, World Council of Optometry (WCO).,1998-2002. Was the recipient of the prestigious award title, “2000 International Optometrist of the Year” by the World Council of Optometry (WCO). Professor Sheni becomes the First Black,the First African to receive such an award. Professor Sheni was the Chair for the popular Fellowship Programme,which places Optometrist in various countries of the World.1998-2002 The mayor of the city Cartagena, Columbia Presented Professor Sheni with the Key to the City of the City of Cartagena in October 2004 for his International humanitarian work. Recipient of the Witelo award [father of Optometry] 2003 Professor Sheni is married to Dr. Jummai Nnasakani Sheni, a medical Doctor and they have three children, Nanji, [22] Joshua, [18] and Nanman Dauda [12]
