A SHORT CROATIA-EU INTRO After Romania’s and Bulgaria’s accession in 2007, European Union extended its membership to its 28th member state: Croatia. Croatia has 4.2 million citizens and it recently celebrated 20 years of independence. With 20 % unemployment rate among citizens it did not become merely a new member state, but also the third poorest state in the EU. After Slovenia, Croatia is also the second member state that used to be a part of Yugoslavia and a country that underwent a bloody war after declaring independence from Yugoslavia in 1991. Croatia’s accession is supposed to be a confirmation of state’s progress in the democratic transition, however in these uncertain times it surely seems that the accession brings more questions than answers for the future of the country as well as of the entire Balkans region.
