A SPECIAL PLEA from LEVELLAND ANIMAL SHELTER for a VERY SPECIAL - TopicsExpress

A SPECIAL PLEA from LEVELLAND ANIMAL SHELTER for a VERY SPECIAL LITTLE DOG: COOPER is a Chihuahua who was picked up as a stray and brought to the shelter back in September. He was adopted after he had been at the shelter for a couple of weeks but he ran away from his new home and made his way back to the shelter. Then he quit eating and lost a lot of weight (for a Chihuahua). He got very dehydrated and was taken to the College Avenue Animal Clinic and put on IVs but continued to get worse. Each day he was at the clinic we expected to hear that he had not made it through night but he kept hanging on, due largely to heroic efforts from Dr. Tracy Jenkins. She kept him on IVs and ran every possible test on him and even did exploratory surgery to find out what was wrong with him. Finally, he started eating and drinking again. Amazingly, Cooper is well enough now to be discharged from the clinic. He has EHRLICHIA and ANAPLASMOSIS, two tick-borne diseases that can be treated and cured with antibiotics. He also has DIABETES which will require insulin shots for the rest of his life. He can’t come back to the shelter and none of the volunteers is able to take him. Unless we can find someone to step up for Cooper he will have to be euthanized. We think he is about 8 to 10 years old. With good care he might live several more years or less than one year. We know this is a long shot and that it will take a very special person or family to take on Cooper and his problems, but if you are willing, please call 806 893-7885 or 806 894-2985. THANK YOU!
