A SPECIAL SHOUT OUT FOR THE SANTA BARBARA LADIES FOOTBALL TEAM. Just a little thought before I sleep tonight, I would like to commend the team for winning the championship game in Bacolod City tonight (The 1st Ceres Cup Football Festival, May 17-18, 2014). The team has been consistent in being at the top and bested other teams in their bracket with 3 wins and 1 draw (12-0, 8-0, 9-0 and 1-1). The Ladies Open was participated by 20 teams coming from Iloilo, Bacolod, San Carlos, Dumaguete and Cebu. In games like this, I oftentimes hear players say: Lets enjoy this moment even if we lose. True enough, I can say those who said these lines really enjoyed last minute shopping at the nearby mall after being eliminated. Well, how about our girls? Never, have I seen them so hungry for victory (more so, after the under-18 SB girls were eliminated by 1 point the day before), they vowed to win and in the end, got the crown. The road to victory was never easy, they are self-reliant from the very start, they prepared their solicitation letter themselves, purchased their own uniforms, paid for their registration fees, arranged for their accommodations and transportation going to Bacolod. They are a true manifestation of what majority of the mothers are claiming: it is easy to raise girls than boys (hehe Im saying this half-jokingly of course). Again, my respect to you and all other football players who joined the tournament, for sleeping on hot and poor ventilated classrooms with floors covered only with folded cartoon boxes, for skipping long baths because water supply is limited, for skipping breakfast because your mothers are miles away and you might be budgeting your money (bad idea of course, pero I did not say anything about it so as not to add to your stress), for seeing your amused glances on some players of other teams with their sosyal moms tagging along with their picnic baskets full of food, power drinks and fruits, for being satisfied with skyflakes and water as snacks compared to other girls who munched on pizza, milkshakes and burgers. I say, congratulations again, your almost everyday training with Coach Val has paid off, your never say die attitude says it all girls. Thank you for making us proud.
