A SPECIAL VETERANS DAY COMMENT: A SALUTE TO ALL WHO HAVE SERVED. Our church conducted a service at a local Nursing Home this afternoon. As I was leaving, I talked to a Mr. Brown. He served in WW2 and Korean Conflict. I hugged him and thanked him! I salute my hometown of DeRidder, La. for having the vision in WW2 to build the first USO building in Nov. 1941, dedicated on Dec. 1, 1941 by Gov. Sam H. Jones. Second place was Galveston, Tx. The USO furnished a social meeting place for Ft Polk soldiers in the Leesville-DeRidder area. The site at DeRidder(now War Memorial Civic Center) is located on land secured in early 1920s by Sam H. Jones and Chick Green, who helped organize first American Legion in DeRidder. More on this in my upcoming book, High Hat Sam-on Gov. Jones life. Men have served in my family since my 5th Great Grandfathers brother, John Nash, who was a quartermaster in 1755 to Gen. George Washington. This was in French and Indian War that helped lead to the Revolution War. John was later paid 200 acres of land in Cumberland County, Va. by Washington for his 7 years of military service. Benjamin Nash,Jr served in Civil War and on my Bailey-Higginbotham side, George W. Higginbotham served in Alabama Calvary. Ben Nash, Jr. is buried at Cravens, La. at Drakes Fork cemetary and Geo. Higginbotham is buried at Hopewell Cemt. between De Ridder and Dry Creek, La. (All Higginbothams in Beauregard and Vernon, natives that is, are descended from this man.) Both Great Grandfathers have Civil War Markers! Thanks for info on John Nash and Gen. Washington is due to William vance Nash and his book, Our Nashs- he was former mayor of Huntsville, Texas and my 5th cousin.
