A SPEECH DELIVERED BY MR. BAKARE ON SATURDAY MAY 14, 2011, AT THE LAUNCH OF THE UNIVERSITY OF LIFE... Good day ladies and gentlemen. I’m highly honoured for the privilege bestowed on me to chair this wondrous occasion. I would like to use this opportunity of standing before you to say a few things about the essence of our gathering here today: to launch a book titled “The University of life”, written by our brother, friend and son, Adebesin Ibraheem Adekunle, fondly called ‘the prof’. Creative writing is an imaginative writing using a particular genre to express or convey an idea. Creative writing entails a lot of things. It is not just about having the ability to create stories. It is also about using carefully selected words and richly embellished language, married with the artistic skills of weaving together threads of events, to create a fictive story, which, though called fiction, speaks loudly to the readers about the various daily struggles of man. A fiction writer uses his experiences of and knowledge about the world around him to create an imaginary but realistic world. However, possessing the creative and the language abilities to write is not enough. An aspiring writer must also have the enduring ability, the stubborn will to stick to the writing struggle until the efforts yield a positive result, in the form of a complete published work. It takes a tremendous amount of self-discipline to complete a book, what with the hours, days, months and perhaps years of back-breaking and brain-racking toiling over writing sheets. On completion of the manuscript, the next and perhaps greater headache for the writer is the issue of getting a good and willing publisher. Financing the publication of a book is a huge problem, especially when the writer has to shoulder that financial responsibility, because many publishers fear financing books written by relatively new or unknown writers. It costs a fortune to get a book published – I’m sure our writer in the house can attest to that! There is a sense of fulfillment which comes with the eventual success, especially if the book is the writer’s first published work. Considering the pains and agonies that a writer goes through in the course of writing a book, through which he aims to express some valid ideas for the benefit of humanity, the society need to celebrate the writer. That is why an occasion like this is necessary, for it does not only afford the new published writer the opportunity to tell the world about his or her new production (the book), it also tests the strength of the support that society give the writer. So, I wish to first of all congratulate Ibraheem for this feat he has achieved, and to, on his behalf, profusely thank everybody present here today, for their love and support for him and his dream. However, I will urge you all to please, in God’s name, support him by donating generously here and now, and buying his book, titled, “THE UNIVERSITY OF LIFE” Talking about the book, its title ordinarily should provoke in every one of us, some curiosity to want to read the book. Or who among us here doesn’t know that the earth on which we live is indeed A UNIVERSITY OF LIFE? A university, having God as both the Chancellor and the Vice-chancellor; a university with so many faculties and many departments; the faculties being our various geographical locations, and the department being our immediate zones. Every day of our lives is a CLASS, and every one – young or old, man or woman – that we daily come in contact with is a TEACHER, from whom we learn valuably invaluable lessons that can never be originally taught by the best of professors in any university. I confidently say that this writer, Ibraheem, is worth celebrating, for this philosophical book of his. Added to his wonderful personality – his great humility, his rich wisdom and intelligence, his kind-heartedness, his cheerfulness and his physical charm – Ibraheem has scored another victory with this book. With this event, he is officially announcing to the world that he has joined the league of Nigerian writers, and this is just the beginning of his breakthrough! I expect a loud AMEN to that! In conclusion, I would like to humbly blaze the trail among the roll call of generous donors here today, by donating this token sum (N : K) to the empowerment of our new writer. May your brain never wane, Ibraheem, and may God continually enrich your reservoir of knowledge. And to all the guests, may the glow in your lives grow brighter, and may God replenish your pocket for whatever you spend here today. I thank you all for coming! Thank you.
