A Salute to all Veterans When I was young there was a man down - TopicsExpress

A Salute to all Veterans When I was young there was a man down the block He was a small man and lived in a modest house In front of his house he had a flagpole Every morning he would wear his army cap and raise the flag Then he would take a step back and stand at attention His chest held high, his shoulders back He would salute the flag and hold that salute for a full minute Why do you do this mister? I just don’t understand Veterans Day what a great day A day of no work, a day of no school A day to have a picnic and play a softball game A day to go to the beach, relax and have a beer I don’t want to stand in the street and watch a parade Why do they give us this day? I just don’t understand When I was eighteen I had to sign up for the draft I had to face the possibility of going to Vietnam What a terrible war, many lives were lost There were no gains only losses A fight in the mud in a country so far away God I don’t want to go Why do they send us there? I just don’t understand September 11,2001, America was attacked The World Trade Center was demolished by terrorists The destruction is overwhelming; Thousands of people have died Brave men and women fight hard to try to save lives I went back to my old neighbor, the old man with the flag I walked outside with him, I held his hand We both stood at attention as we both saluted the flag For today I finally understand Bob Schneider Proud American Proud Firefighter
