A Saturday morning accident has taken the lives of two Benton residents. Melanie May, 34, and Aaron May, 9, died after the Jeep they were riding in at 1:05 a.m. crossed the center line of Route 37 south of Bonnie, ran through an embankment and plunged into Atchison Creek. The driver, Nick Rakas, 19, of Benton, escaped the vehicle, which was upside down in the creek, but Melanie and Aaron were unable to free themselves and died of asphyxiation due to drowning, according to Eddie Joe Marks, Jefferson County coroner.
