A Severe Thunderstorm Watch has been issued by the SAWS for the western portions of KZN. People in these areas should watch for storms that are capable of producing large hail, damaging winds, localized flooding and frequent lightning. Conditions over KZN look very favorable for severe development with CAPE of about 2000-2700 and lifted indices if about -6. Conditions are also favorable over much of the Eastern highveld especially over the MP escarpment. Midlevel winds at the 500mb level are weak to nothing; but descent NE flow of surface air(850mb) and some degree of surface convergence means storms are definitely likely over KZN. Organized convection isnt likely but rather clusters of severe cells(multi-cellular) storms which are rather slow moving due to the lack of sufficient steering winds should form, and these are capable of producing flash floods.
