A Soul’s Song Br. Basil Edwards, OSB A soul is made to sing, and sing it must. It must to other things attend, also, but when its shape is done it sings. And sometimes when the vessel that it moves knows that it’s there, the singing breaks the bond of clay and can be heard. What shape it’s song, it matters not. The reason for the singing is the key to understanding what the soul is singing. The greatest gift I know is grace and it not won, But poured upon us like some ancient Greek libation on the ground where some soaks in and some runs off the rocks. Just when that soaking fills the soul to bursting out the vessel sings along In joyous praise of grace and Giver. Three times it sings each song in laud of God the Three-In-One. ------------------------------------------------------------------ William Thomas Edwards (Tom), also known as Brother Basil, is a vowed religious in the Companions of St. Luke, OSB, has been a member at St. Paul’s since 1990. He sings in the 11:15 choir and has been director of the (now dormant) Schola Cantorum Sancti Pauli, a small men’s chant choir. He is a practicing physician at Harborview Medical Center and is professor of anesthesiology and pain medicine at the University of Washington.
