A-State Bowling Earns Second Seed at Mid-Winter Invitational JONESBORO, Ark. (1/18/14) — The Arkansas State women’s bowling team improved its total pinfall by four spots and went 4-1 at the Mid-Winter Invitational in the Jonesboro Bowling Center Saturday. The Red Wolves jumped from sixth to second in total pinall and earned the second seed for Sunday’s bracket play. A-State’s total pinfall of 10,012 was second only to Nebraska’s 10,254. Rounding out the top five in total pinfall were Central Missouri (9,994), Sam Houston State (9,900), and Stephen F. Austin (9,883). Arkansas State finished the day with a 4-1 record and improved to 8-2 through the first two days of the event. A-State’s eight wins are tied for the second-most in the tournament with Central Missouri, while Nebraska leads the field with a 9-1 record. “We played much better today than we did yesterday,” A-State bowling coach Justin Kostick said. “I’m glad we got the four wins again today, but really proud of how we stepped up and improved our pinfall numbers. I’m excited about being the number two seed and hopefully we’ll bowl well enough tomorrow to give ourselves a chance to win the tournament.” A-State began Saturday’s traditional team matches with three straight wins over McKendree (1,066-854), Central Missouri (1,027-942), and UAB (1,072-879). The Red Wolves took on Sam Houston State in their fourth match of day and fell to the Bearkats 1,007-959 before bouncing back to defeat Vanderbilt 1,004-929 in their last match of the day. Arkansas State sophomore Stephanie Mims made her first career all-tournament team by recording the fourth-highest total pinfall on the day of 1,071. She averaged 214.2 per match on the day and recorded a high score of 243 in A-State’s second match. Senior Ashley Rucker missed the all-tournament team by only seven pins after registering a total pinfall of 1,058 and had the team’s highest game of the day by bowling a 246 in the team’s third match. “I’m very proud of Stephanie for earning her first all-tournament honors in her career,” Kostick added. “She came through big for us today and the rest of the team was solid as well.” The Red Wolves will take on Nebraska in their first match of bracket play Sunday morning. Action is scheduled to get underway at 8 a.m. in the Jonesboro Bowling Center. Admission is free.
