A Statement from the Global Shapers Community The Global Shapers Community is a family of young leaders from all walks of life that are collectively engaged in concrete activities to make this world a better place, starting with our own local communities. We are organised in 354 Hubs based in cities in 157 countries across the world. We count several thousands of members and are diverse in gender, religion, ethnicity, nationality, expertise, experience and are united by our shared passion for making our communities and the world better. Our Community is made up of young leaders in their 20s and early 30s. We all grew up with the belief that the world is developing a true global civilization based on a genuine willingness to accept its own diversity and the shared destiny that unites all of us. We are optimistic that in this century we can use the ingenuity of the human race to solve the big issues which challenge the very existence of humankind : to stamp out poverty, to provide everybody with access to education and healthcare systems, to preserve our natural resources and to address so many other urgent needs. We believe that in this era, human sophistication and advanced technological capabilities will create a new age of human dignity where even the thought that human beings could kill each other for any reason would be unimaginable and would be considered to belong to a dark age that we have finally vanquished. We believe that in this new age the only risk to the sanctity of life is violence in whatever form it is carried out. An important mind-set for this promising age is the importance of collaboration; buoyed by the recognition that we are bound together and stakeholders of a common destiny there is no challenge that we cannot overcome. There are have been several promising signs of this global cooperation with examples of the common progress made in the realization of the Millennium Development Goals and the creation of the multilateral mechanisms to facilitate collaboration between peoples on challenges that no single nation can resolve alone. Today we witness a change in the direction that our world is taking: instead of cooperation, more and more leaders are betraying these ideals and reverting to confrontation instead. We observe this development occurring simultaneously in many parts of the world. We are distraught every time leaders make decisions that prioritise confrontation over collaboration, leaving citizens in bad situations where young people ultimately have to pay the price. And we are concerned when those not directly affected react with increasing indifference; even though this may be out of a feeling of helplessness. The Global Shapers Community is deeply saddened by the violence and loss of life as a result of the current conflicts, including in cities where we have Hubs. As Shapers we remain united and committed to finding peaceful solutions, and send our thoughts, prayers and support to all those who are affected. We appeal to all leaders to be champions for a spirit of cooperation that respects diversity. We appeal to all people in the world to raise their voices in favour of a spirit of collaboration and to actively condemn violent conflict and the loss of human lives where ever it may occur. We, the Global Shapers Community, pledge to act, cooperate, and not be silent on matters that prevent our generation, as well as all generations, from living in peace and harmony.
