A Sure Sign Hereby know ye the Spirit of God: Every spirit that confesseth that Jesus Christ is come in the flesh is of God: And every spirit that confesseth not that Jesus Christ is come in the flesh is not of God. 1 John 4:2,3 During every great revival, there has always risen a fear of the counterfeit. While we should be aware of the abilities of Lucifer to deceive people, we should never be obsessed with the belief that he can actually thwart a true move of God. The Bible clearly states how to determine whether or not God’s Holy Spirit is working. Jonathan Edwards, one of the most well-respected American revivalists of all time, confronted this issue in the following manner. We have the same rule given to distinguish the true Spirit from all counterfeits: “Wherefore I give you to understand, that no man speaking by the Spirit of God calleth Jesus accursed: and that no man can say that Jesus is the Lord, but by the Holy Ghost” (1 Corinthians 12:3). If the Spirit which is at work among a people is plainly observed to convince them of Christ, and lead them to Christ, it is a sure sign that it is the true and right Spirit. If the Spirit which is at work confirms their minds in the belief that He is the Son of God, and was sent of God to save sinners, and that He is the only Savior, it is a sure sign that it is the true and right Spirit. If the Spirit which is at work teaches that they stand in great need of Him, and instills in them higher thoughts of Him than they used to have, and inclines their affections more to Him—it is a sure sign that it is the true and right Spirit. -Steve Hill Ministries
