A TIME TO KILL @ATimeToKillBway the new Broadway adaptation of the classic John Grisham novel (it was previously a 1990s film starring Matthew McConaughey and Samuel L. Jackson) is a red-hot tea kettle of water tossed like a bomb from a moving train. From the moment the play opens, when we learn a little Black girl is viciously beaten and raped by two White males in 1980s Mississippi, we are instantly sucked into this sad and tragic American tale of race, class, violence, politics, blind rage, and, yes, the criminal justice system. Think Trayvon Martin. Think this nations long and winding road of dealing, or not, with racism, and this stage version brings that social dysfunction right into your comfy theater-going laps. With a purposely arresting set design and a stellar group of actors and actresses including John Douglas Thompson and Sebastian Arcelus, and written by Rupert Holmes, A Time To Kill on stage is as jarring as that George Zimmerman verdict that set off protests nationwide Summer of 2013. And all the more reason why people should see this play. For in confronting this kind of theater we are also confronting ourselves, the best of us, the worst of us, and our racial divides, then and now.
