A TRAP IN THE DESERT(Excerpt) by: Sadoh Muhammad Sanni The camp much regarded as Omega Palace, was situated at a wide pit near the foot of Mountains Tahat and Assekreme in the famous Ahaggar Plateau. It was a camp which nobody had ever bragged about going in and coming out alive. The Algerian citizens who had been hit with the tale of the camp existence had, after unraveling (in interaction without experience) the forces behind its existence, resolved never to have anything vis-á-vis the camp and its environs. The Omega Palace according to them was a ‘No Go Area’! What the Algerians and expatriates lacked in comprehension about the Omega Palace was that: two Algerian nationals – Jabbar El-Amin and Maddar-Jan’at bin Jandi, originally owned the camp. Their business at the camp was simply clandestine and nefarious executions! They had to acquire human flesh and parts, and subsequently sold same to their confidential client- Tahar Tahir who did always visit from India. Every bit of their business execution was however done in the top impetus of secrecy and the law enforcement agencies were successful relegated to the murk and mute. Apart from Algeria where the action took place, even the law enforcement agencies of the neighbouring countries of Libya, Mali and Niger were all made to know no knowledge of the Omega Palace. In fact, the gigantic prowess of the media channels was also kept in absolute darkness. No newspaper, radio or television had ever conveyed a glimpse of story about Omega Palace! Omega Palace had three tents: all in black sturdy tarpaulin. In each tent, there was a short doorway that made the tents resembled the temporary camp tents for pilgrims during hajj operations in Saudi Arabia. Between the three tents, had a dusty pavement linking them stylishly together. The tents had their interiors always in the gloom to such that even an active animal or human posing by the doorway would find it a hindrance to see beyond the door to the interiors unless with the introduction of light or light object. Either on aerial or distant view of the camp, it was easy to note that the tents formed a triangular stand at their position in the camp. An electrified barbed wire fence was constructed around the entire camp. The fence demarcated the camp away from the steep of the shallow wide pit that rode upwards to the open desert. The ground of the camp was covered in crawling flowery meadow that remained ever-green all time in spite of the geographical location in the desert. A wide pond (that appeared naturally not constructed) situated at the front of the camp on the northeast navigation had a width of 15(fifteen) metres all round and a depth which only the constructors alone had the notion. Its depth was relatively considered infinity, as it was a stalemate for any eye vision to penetrate through to the lowest depth of the pond even without water in its content. No matter how strong is the human vision, it would always terminate at the dark clouding substances in the farther depth of the pond without getting through to the farthest ebb. In the round giant pond had a fierce looking heavy serpent which some people appalled a boa constrictor, while to some; an anaconda and to others; a python. Whichever it was among these three, no one had been able to prove the authenticity of the colossal serpent because those who could come close to it had never come out alive to speak about it. However, it was obvious that the pond in the front view of the camp inhabited a heavy fierce killing serpent that snatched humans away at night in its mouth! Through the daytime, the giant serpent of about 50(fifty) feet long; one and half foot wide, had its entire longitudinal body in the deep pond of water excepting its head, which was always placed on the outer edge of the pond. This posture of the serpent was extremely different at night when it would be performing its certified blood-sucking obligations. According to Tahar-the purchasing client from India, he was solely on the target to have all his stock slaughtered. Therefore, the serpent was trained to capture human stock alive on a strangle so that the final extinct should come from blazing slaughtering knife of Jabbar and Maddar… …Indeed people had wondered severally the source behind the disappearance of people around Ahaggar Plateau especially at night. The name Omega Palace had always remained in the bosom of secrecy, yet when too many things happened eccentrically and many interrogations surfaced indiscriminately, the truth about the ambiguity would be at the fingertip of everyone: even with the law enforcement agencies!.........
