"A Tale of Two Siblings Which of the two did what his father wanted? (Matthew 21:31). Scripture: Matthew 21:28-32 Song: “Wherever He Leads I’ll Go” As a child, my son hated to say no. And with his tendency to schedule 10 minutes for a 20-minute task, he frequently promised more than he could accomplish. Picture me, with only the trash standing between me and a clean house, asking my son, “Would you take the bags to the trash bin?” “Sure.” (I don’t think he ever said “No.”) He returned his attention to the CD he was listening to. Relieved, I waited, my eyes straying from the clean house to the full trash bags waiting by the door. Five minutes ticked by . . . ten . . . I repeated my request. Again, he promised. Again, I waited. On the other hand, “No” was my daughter’s favorite word. She found it easy to deny requests for help, too focused on the task at hand to let me interrupt her. I’d ask again, she’d refuse, again. The funny thing is, when she finished whatever she was doing, she’d see the trash, heave a sigh, and carry it outside. God looks at the actions of our hands and feet—not merely the promises of our mouths. Dear Father in Heaven, sometimes I promise to do something, like praying for a friend in need, and start well. But I confess that often, after a good beginning, I fail to carry through. Forgive me. Teach me the discipline of fulfilling my promises. I pray this prayer in the name of Jesus, my Savior and Lord. Amen."
