“A Third Of The Way Through June” (Quatrains of something or other in 7-7-7-6 syllabification, more or less) A third of the way through June, And under a waxing moon, Life’s little pleasures are strewn Just about everywhere. Not just the blossoms and leaves, Not just the wind-waving sheaves, Not just the light, shorter sleeves, But the release of care. School’s out, although that means naught; Days I was formally taught Are long gone, but—as I ought— I learn things everywhere. It’s just easier when warm… Easier when, with each storm, A foot of snow isn’t the norm. For hard rain, I’m prepared. It’s a more “legato” time. Seems like it’s simpler to rhyme. Feels like I’m hitting my prime In the near-summer air. Still, I haven’t put on shorts Or taken in any live sports. The seasonal mood supports Viewpoints “devil may care.” No reason to importune. Let each new day call the tune, And when timing’s opportune, Seize it. You’ll know. I swear. You’ll know it’s time to hold tight, Time to let fancies take flight, Or time to slouch into light. June’s flow will take you there. © Verse-Case Scenario, LLC 2014 ------ Again, when I do this verbal “dance,” the words lead; I merely follow. This work was the result of my most abnormal of feelings, “mellow.” I generally don’t do “mellow.” I’ve always remembered what I was told when a youth: in people, as in bananas, “mellow” is the last stage before “rotten.” Mellowness, therefore, is not something for which I strive. In other brief items: --A new med for Jean (Ampyra) just arrived. She went through all manner of tests to qualify for it, and it holds the promise that, with luck, she might be able to walk easier and more steadily—possibly without so much as a cane. All digits crossed here; any you can spare will be welcome. --Speaking of Jean: she’s out with several other ladyfriends seeing “Maleficent.” I am therefore off the hook. Perhaps this is contributing to my mellowness. --More fresh veggies from the CSA today. Love that. --Another arthritis shot for Samson today. Love what they’re doing to his liveliness and ease of ambulation. --Two of three vehicle gas tanks are nearly empty, and we possess a surplus of supermarket gas points to use to refill them. By my reckoning, that means a fill-up for the Outback (approx. 17 gal. if down to vapor) at 2¢/gallon, plus some left over for a discount on filling up the Fiesta. If staying chubby means screwing OPEC, I’ll go to the grocery store every damn day! --I guess it’s extremely cool to be a hockey fan in Los Angeles these days. Still, the proliferation of NHL franchises in cities below, say, the Rust Belt continues to defy my easy understanding even now, decades after it began. It surprises me not one whit, however, that the city of Atlanta, GA has lost not one but two NHL teams back to colder, friendlier Canadian climes. The incongruity of that town and that sport was insurmountable, apparently. Atlanta: baseball, football, NASCAR, yah. Hockey, nah. Basketball, meh. --Apparently Johnny Manzeil was partying hearty last night in Austin, TX, despite having a practice session with the Browns today in Cleveland. I’m already drooling at the prospects of an epic meltdown. Perhaps even a Tebow-esque one, but with wholly different moral coloration. --According to newly added Storm Team 8-er Ethan Huston (who, I’m sure, was hired by WGAL mainly for his uncanny resemblance to Steve Carell as Brick Tamland in the “Ron Burgundy” movies), the weather’s supposed to be drippy and humid through Friday, then clearing for the weekend. Sold.
