A Thought for the Day If you say that you believe in animal - TopicsExpress

A Thought for the Day If you say that you believe in animal rights and you dont support veganism as a fundamental moral baseline, you are confused. It makes no sense to say that animals have moral rights if it is okay to treat animals as resources and use and kill them for human purposes. Treating animals as resources--however humanely you treat them--is inconsistent with regarding animals as having moral value. Its that simple. Think of it in the human context: if you say that you believe in human rights, you dont talk about humane human slavery being okay. That is because slavery is inconsistent with the idea of moral personhood. A slave is not a person; a slave is a thing. The same reasoning applies to nonhumans. If you say you believe in animal rights, you dont talk about humane animal slavery. That is because the treatment--however humane--of animals as property is inconsistent with the idea of nonhumans as persons, or beings with inherent moral value. An animal who is a piece of property is just a thing. If animals matter morally, they must have one right: the right not to be a thing. And that means that the moral status of animals requires nothing less than veganism.
