A US diplomat does not have the bargaining position he once did. The days of America being seen as a bulwark against tyranny are over. The diplomats know it, the Cubans know it, the American citizens know it, and now the President knows it. Before the United States can attempt to persuade other nations to change their behavior, it must cease its descent into tyranny and begin the slow climb back to the ideals the nation was once said to embody.
