A University of Oklahoma museum has invited a filmmaker to present his films at a film screening on Saturday in conjunction with the museums newest exhibit. The Fred Jones Jr. Museum of Art will welcome Dustinn Craig from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. to display the Apache culture in correlation with the exhibition Allan Houser Drawings: The Centennial Exhibition. “We were looking for examples of contemporary Apache artists and Dustinn’s work is a wonderful example of an artist who examines the Apache culture both historically and in the present,” said Susan Baley, director of education at the museum. Craig was a main interest to come to present because of his relation of his films, mainly Geronimo, to the Houser exhibition. Allan Houser was a member of the Warm Springs Chiricahua Apache tribe and was the first to be born outside captivity since Geronimo’s surrender in 1886. “Craig’s short films will provide a more expansive vision of the Apache culture today and people will gain a better understanding of the history of the tribe and how the culture continues today,” Baley added. The museum hosts many film screenings but they rarely get the opportunity to have the filmmaker introduce their films. “The audience will have the opportunity to see the films and the exhibition to consider Allan Houser’s impact on a younger generation of Apache artists,” Baley said. The event will be held in the museum’s auditorium and is free and open to the public. For more information visit, ou.edu/fjjma/calendar.html.
