A VISIT TO THE 9/11 MEMORIAL The new One World Trade Center building is enormous - 104 stories high and the tallest skyscraper in the western hemisphere - but I have to ask myself, why would they build another one? The final component, the spire on top was put in place in October 2013 and standing directly beneath the main entrance and looking up is a little daunting to say the least! The 2 reflection pools in themselves are a brilliant memorial to those killed in the 9/11 attacks, each group of people having their names grouped with each other and engraved around the edge of the pools. One of the pools surrounds, basically has every name from the North Tower where the majority of people perished. The September 11 Museum was opened in May 2014 and is based underground mostly which has you feeling that all this happened above you. There is a large collection of photographs, video, text message recordings, sounds from the day and even one of the Fire Engines Ladder 3 which was destroyed when parts of the building collapsed onto it. Components from the main communication tower atop the North Tower are also on display, and like everything else, a tanlged mess of metal and steel. One area has photographs of every person who died and video screens where you could pull up a short story about any individual - who they were, what they were doing at the time and why they were in the World trade centre. It was not an area I enjoyed staying within for too long, there were people in tears in there and Im not one for holding back so had to get out before I joined in! The whole Museum is one of the quietest museums I have ever visited - everyone just reflecting on the events of the day and watching video footage they might never have seen before or photos from all angles etc. Original columns from the collapsed steel structure were on display, bundles of tangled metal and even a set of concrete stairs used by survivors. There are just so many memories within the museum that have been put together and its very hard to come away from there without feeling a sense of despair for all those who died. With so many items on display, one could easily spend 2 or 3 days reading and listening to every item on display, just not possible in the time many would have I am sure.
