A Vision for Comal ISD “The first step toward creating an improved future is developing the ability to envision it. VISION will ignite the fire of passion that fuels our commitment to do WHATEVER IT TAKES to achieve excellence. Only VISION allows us to transform dreams of greatness into the reality of achievement through human action. VISION has no boundaries and knows no limits. Our VISION is what we become in life. ” - Tony Dungy Four years after Tony Dungy became the head coach of the Indianapolis Colts, the team won Super Bowl XLI. While it certainly didn’t hurt to have Peyton Manning at quarterback, the road to victory started with something even more important than a Future Hall of Famer: vision. Study the success of any company, organization or individual, and you will find at the very beginning a vision; a vision of what they wanted their future to look like. The same principle holds true for us as a school district. The key to our success, which is ultimately measured by the success of our students, starts with a clear vision of what we want for our students, our staff and our community. Since arriving in Comal ISD nearly two years ago, I’ve had the opportunity to visit with parents, teachers and students and hear what they want for their children, their students and for themselves. Our Board of Trustees have also shared with me what they want for our district. As a superintendent – and parent – I also have a picture of what our district can achieve. Based upon on what I have heard from our community, I would like to share with you what I believe our vision for Comal ISD is: • We will be a school district where academic performance matters, but is not the only measurement of success. • Our students are prepared for a world where communication, critical thinking, collaboration, digital citizenship and work ethic matters. • Teacher quality will be number one by way of a world-class professional development system. • Our schools will address the varying and diverse needs of our community. While having a vision is the crucial first step in achieving success, a vision alone does not get you there. When Dungy took over the Colts, they already had several strengths on which he capitalized, and he worked tirelessly in areas where improvement was needed. The same holds true for us. We have a lot of strengths on which to build upon, and work to do in other areas. Getting there will not happen overnight. It will take a lot of hard work and determination. There will be challenges and obstacles to overcome. New ideas will be tried; some will work, some won’t. Nevertheless, we will persevere – we have grit. More importantly though, we have tremendous students, teachers, parents and community members here in Comal ISD. Together, I have no doubt that we can achieve our vision.
