That child loves a Christmas story and this is one I would recommend for anyone who has faced challenges, especially during the Holidays. Ellen McGuire is a single mother, trying to raise two young children. Molly and Jason are well-behaved, curious, and avid readers...what author wouldnt love that? Toss in Ben the ultimate Mr. Scrooge, a small town depending on a local factory for their meager income, a rather dashing plant manager, and a slum lord who doesnt have the decency to even attempt to fix up the over-priced rental properties in town and you have a potential Christmas classic. The book is a fast read and Donna Walo-Clancy has tossed in a bag lady who has a magical way of showing up every time Ellen begins to lose all hope. I think the thing I loved most about the story was the fact that the two children, Molly and Jason, seemed to understand their mother was doing everything possible to protect them and give them what little she had. As a young mother who skipped a few meals myself in order to feed the children, I felt her despair as she trudged through the snow looking for a job that was not only elusive but nearly impossible to find with the layoffs at the plant. Perhaps those who have never felt that total loss of faith will not discover the true beauty of this book, but I urge you to give it a try!
