A Wedding Story The scene was eclectic beauty everywhere. In an industrial park that confused many an Über driver, beautiful people in a wide array of dress made their way into a big, steel building. The doorway was luscious hardwood against the steel. Incredible skin colors from so many cultures made a tapestry of acceptance as we all smiled and got to know one another. A recently married straight couple and a recently married lesbian couple joined our conversation right away. I hear that Ahi is wearing a dress!, announced one of our clump of eight 8. A noise came from us in unison that wasnt unlike the little green alien guys from Toy Story- oooOooo. A remarkable industrial art installation softly rained water from a multi-level, steel, laser-cut, boxed mountain skyline structure from the ceiling into what looked like a break in a lava floor. The sound as it hit gave the feeling of two strong elements meeting in a soothing way. After a cocktail hour, we took our seats for the ceremony in an understated press room. Simple red and white floral arrangements sat on a table behind the dais. The woman officiating stepped up and the song Somebody to Love, by Queen began to play. The wedding party made their way down in pairs of F/F, F/F and M/F. The ring bearer was begrudgingly put in place. Then the first bride appeared. A split second took place as the group, programmed to only stand when the woman in white comes down the aisle, decided that both brides deserved that honor and we all stood joyfully. Ahi, in a simple, red satin gown and a white, floral Hawaiian style headpiece made her way down with her father. The backless gown showed her back tattoo which screamed of strength on her raw umber skin. Her mother, in gold, stood and they all embraced. Then Ahi honored significant loved ones with beautiful leis. Then, the double doors opened to reveal Michaela; the second bride and my friend. She was a classic image that could have been cut from any time. Ivory skin in a full, white, corseted, cross-wrap dress that hugged her models body. She cut an image that could have easily been swapped with any film star or débutante. She made her way down with her father, hugged her mother and with no mention of giving away, she joined her beloved. The vows were self-written and genuine pledges that expressed how they have inspired one another and what they plan to do to continue this trend. Rings were exchanged and they were pronounced Mrs. and Mrs. with an amalgamation of both of their last names. I went through 3 kleenex and I leave with genuine hope that, above all, love will prevail. Colleen Miller 7-27-2014
