A Well-kept Secret In Music Who could have known that Alonzo Jones was an exceptional young musician? By Kenrick Georges July 27, 2013. My exposure to the formal elements in music came when I was twelve years old, in the St. Kitts-Nevis Defense Force Band. There were a number of newcomers, much of them around my age, and a little older. Young Al Jones showed up, and ripped the whole conventional approach of learning to read music to threads. It could have been the result of his math skills, his ability to understand the process better that the others, and, of course, a talent like none of us had ever seen before in a beginners class. Al was able to decipher any chain of complex rhythms, any sub-division, and with relative ease. He played a rare instrument, the E flat Clarinet. It was a difficult instrument to master, for the average beginner, but for Al Jones, it was hardly a speed bump in his path. Al learned, and moved quickly, and the bandleader, Cpt. Val Morris, recognized Al Jones’ unique ability to perform at the level that he did in such a short time. Al became a pillar to lean on in the band room; he would often be consulted for help to clarify problems other young musicians faced with their parts. Al Jones went on to play bass guitar with the popular Ellie Matt and the GIs Brass, but the full extent of his musical ability was far from being exploited. Not many people would have known of Al’s exceptional musical ability, but of the few who might have known some of them might have forgotten. Al Jones: a bright young star whose brilliance was lost, almost as soon as he started to shine. However, it was an awesome thing to witness. Thanks Al.
