A Yezidi woman builds a wall in the vill Caption:A Yezidi woman builds a wall in the village of Haktien, some 20 kms from the northwestern Iraqi-Syrian border 07 October 2003. The Yezidis have followed their religion for 4,000 years which closely resembles Judaism and Christianity, but Yezidis do not acknowledge the existence of the devil and have been declared devil worshippers by topple Iraqi leader Saddam Hussein, Muslims, Christians and Jews. It was initially thought that only 1,000 Yezidis existed world-wide but according to Second Lieutenant Gene Palka of the 101st Airborne division, there are 200,000 Yezidis living in north west Iraq. Most were forced out of their homes in the remote mountains by Saddam after 1975 and now live in villages on barren plains near the Syrian border.
