A beautiful and sad myth from Estonia. It was the tale of the goddess Lindu, daughter of Uko, who was King of the Heavens. Linda was the sovereign of birds, her title Queen of Birds, and she lived on the shores of the Baltic Sea amongst her winged subjects. In every season she knew where each bird belonged and made certain they kept on the right paths as they migrated each season. Many suitors flew down from the Heavens to ask her for her hand in marriage. She rejected the Sun and Moon, finding them altogether too predictable, each day they followed their same course through the Heavens. The Pole Star she dismissed as too set in his ways, never leaving his post in the sky. But then the Northern Lights came to court her and was wooed by his beauty and splendor. She fell in love with him at once and agreed to marry him. The Northern Lights could not stand the brightness of day long, so after they were betrothed he returned to the land of midnight promising to return for the wedding. Linda busied herself preparing for her wedding bur when the day arrived the Northern Lights proved to be as inconsistent as he was beautiful and never returned. With each passing day, Lindu grew sadder and sadder until her wedding dress was soaked with tears. She wept in the meadows, heedless of the fluttering birds around her. Uko looked down from his throne in the Heavens and felt his daughters sorrow and with a fathers love ordered the winds to take her from the earth and place her near him in the sky. Once there her wedding veil blew out behind her and its threads were turned into a million glistening stars forming the night pathway called the Milky Way. She continues to watch over her birds, protecting them in their migration.
