A big lesson from Promise Iwuchukwu The ekpo society is a society shared by the Igbo, Ibibio, Efik, Annang, Eket and Ekoi. The ekpo society in the olden days was very influential and still is today. The ekpos or spirits in Ibibio, were meant to represent the spirit of the ancestors and they presided over events such as the New Yam Festival, and important burials. Ekpos are celebrated by the Igbo in (Imo, Abia, and Ebonyi). The Ekpo society is a fraternity, and during festivals, Ekpo masquerades chased women and young children but never men.
