A big update on our little Scouty-bear - SHE SMILED!! And not just the sleep-smiles, but *real* ones :) When Grammie and I called her name, she opened her eyes, looked right at us, and smiled SO big for us - and she did it 3 or 4 times :) She is doing so wonderfully - shes as far up as she can go on her feeds, theyre weaning her completely off of her pain/sedation meds, her head/renal/abdominal ultrasounds have all been top notch, eye exams (to check for retinopathy of prematurity) are all great with no problems. Only thing were still working on super hard (other than just growing!) are her lungs - the doctors had to give her another round of steroids to try to reduce the inflammation in her lungs due to severe BPD (bronchiopulmonary dysplasia - lung scarring/inflammation-very common in preemies, but hers is particularly nasty). Hoping that the steroids do what they did the last time and get her little lungs some relief from her high oscillator settings (the oscillator is a type of ventilation that helps the lungs stay inflated) and high oxygen needs (although, she has been weaned down quite a bit on both the oscillator and her oxygen, but its still pretty high). So fingers crossed the steroids will do what they need to do. Believe it or not, when Marty and I said, Maybe shell be with us by the beginning of January..., the nurses said it might be possible!!
