A bitter sweet night of trivia at RUB BBQ in Ann Arbor. It was a rather full hose for that venue with such teams as “Just The Tip (with 13 players)”, “A Blessing of Unicorns”, “Suck it Trebek”, “Unicorn Sprinkles”, to name a few. Although we were two team members down (our music/Author guy and our Astronomy guy) we still made a good showing. The first round started out great. But epic fail in the end (more on this later). Some questions from round one: What actor played the lead role in the 2001 movie “Monkey Bone”? Other than Tiger Woods, who is the highest earning pro golfer in the US? (Hint: nickname is “Lefty”) Gary Gygax and Dave Arneson created what game in the 1970s? This question truly separated the super geeks from the trivia posers. At a length of 1770 Kilometers, what African nation has the longest coast line with the Mediterranean Sea? Frank Sinatra, Joey Bishop, Sammy Davis Jr., blab la bla, were know as what group? Although we thought that some of the younger teams might have had a challenge with this, it was not to be. A real softball question. This question is in the category of common knowledge, not trivia. SOCIAL! The playwright, Henrik Ibsen, known as the “Father of Realism” is from what European country? We had the right region, but not the right country. In recent events: 31 year old actor, Cory Monteith, who recently died, played what character in the TV show “Glee”? What religion is comprised of the “4 Noble Truths”? Every good boy deserves fudge is a mnemonic device for what? Another social as everyone got this right. What popular disco song starts out “Fist I was afraid, I was petrified”? We got all 4 mystery round questions thanks to our WNBA specialist, in Basketball vs. football player hall of fame. Just missing two answers in a sea if give away questions, we were 1st place going into the final question with 60 league points. There was a three way tie for 2nd at 59. So we had to risk it all for the final question. There was much rejoicing when the category was revealed as “80s Movie Characters”. When the question started to read “In the movie Bill and Ted’s excellent Adventure…” it was most tranquil. FQ: In the movie “Bill and Ted’s Excellent Adventure”, name 6 of the 8 historical figures they brought back in time. Well our two 80s experts were there and feverously writing down all 8 (Yours truly is one of these so called 80s experts). We just needed to chose 6 and we were on our way to first place! You see where I’m going here? We chose our 6 and sat down to our drinks in celebration. Not to be. I won’t give away all the details, but let’s just say it was Genghis Khan and not Attila the Hun. KKKAAAAAHHHHNNNN!!!!! We held our heads in shame. Party on, and be excellent to each other. It got worse from there. I think we only got 41 points or so in round two. Other than Wayne Brady name the other two most occurring actors on the US version of “Who’s Line is it Anyway”? We didn’t get this one, but our MC Miss Lizzy awarded us one of her coveted buttons for our answer of “That one tall white guy”. Last week Apple was convicted of trying to “price fix” what? With a population of over 800K, what is the largest US City containing the letter “B”. It’s not what you think. Or even your 2nd guess either. In order to drive a bus or other heavy machinery, what does the designation CDL mean on a drivers license? Name the only MLB pitcher to throw 2 no hitters in a row. Props to our WNBA specialist for this one. He knows a lot of baseball too. What country singer was Julia Roberts once married to? What country is the world’s largest producer of oil? What 1987 box office bomb starred Warren Beatty and Dustin Hoffman? What is the third book in Dan Brown’s Robert Langdon series? We wagered all 20 points for the final question, but we were so far behind that it didn’t matter. We got it right and moved up to 3rd place though. In the Toy Hall Of Fame, there are only two games, which are not gaming counsels, which require electricity to run. Name one. There was much debate as to if a battery constituted “electricity”. It was widely assumed that these were “plug in toys”, which was a correct assumption. Even still, one of our team members was adamant about “Simon or Merlin”. I think she just liked making the little beep boop noises. We picked one of the right ones though.
