A bunch of previous posts I made a few months ago covered the aircraft that were to meet the British Air Staff Requirement F.5/34. For those unfamiliar with the Air Staff Requirements the leading letter tells you what role the spec is for so F = fighters, B = bombers, T= trainers, G = general utility types such as observation, Army Co-op etc and R = flying boats. Meanwhile the numbers tell you this was the fifth requirement which had been placed in 1934. As I said at the time although three aircraft were built as prototypes, none of them actually were selected with a private venture from Gloster’s winning the contract, namely with the Gladiator. The design staff at Hawker & Supermarine had in the meantime looked at more advanced designs from their submissions to the earlier spec. Hawker, under Chief Designer Sidney Camm, continued with the development of their ‘Fury Monoplane’ deleting the fixed under carriage as seen in this illustration, and opting for retractable undercarriage. The early stages of the Hurricane can clearly be seen in this precursor design.
