A bus carrying 53 passengers fell into a ravine in Lao Cai Province, killing 12 and injuring at least 41 on September 1. The accident occurred in the evening, around 7pm, when the bus, owned by Sao Viet (Viet Star) Company, headed towards Lao Cai Town, swerved to avoid an oncoming vehicle. The director of Sao Viet Company, Do Van Bang, said that all the passengers were tourists on a holiday. “Most were from Hanoi, but others were from Ho Chi Minh City,” Bang said. Details of the victims is yet to be disclosed. The Lao Cai’s transport department said that, as of 11pm, the accident had left 12 people dead, including the driver, and 41 others injured. The minister of transport, Dinh La Thang, headed up a task force to go to Lao Cai and oversee rescue work. Another task force, including doctors from Viet Duc Hospital, and led by Deputy Minister of Health Nguyen Thanh Long, also arrived in Lao Cai that evening. Local leaders and doctors have arrived since the accident to expedite these efforts. National Independence Day fell on Tuesday, giving many people had a four-day vacation. Official figures have shown that, during the four-day holiday, 186 traffic accidents have taken place across the country, killing 114 people and injuring 145.
