A call for more co-op and #mutual #housing The Guardian carries letters addressing the housing crisis including one from David Freud, Minister for welfare reform, who explains how housing benefits will be paid under universal credit. A separate letter from Ed Mayo, Co-operatives UK, and other social housing experts, states that as a country we have yet to realise the potential of co-operative and mutual housing, which accounts for just 0.6% of the UKs housing supply, compared with 18% in Sweden, 15% in Norway and 8% in Austria. Such housing solutions offer people affordable shelter - especially for elderly and younger people and those in lower income brackets, they say. The letter argues that the next government needs to grasp this important opportunity to turn the tide on what is becoming a toxic housing market. The Guardian, Page: 39
