A childhood hero gets honored tonight in Montreal. I love nights - TopicsExpress

A childhood hero gets honored tonight in Montreal. I love nights like tonight’s. I sit on my sofa, cold drink in hand, and watch as my heroes of yesteryear are paraded on the ice. Soon memories of laying on my family’s floor in front of the black and white Zenith watching the Habs win Cup after cup after cup. Or it seemed that way anyway. The memories have already started flooding this morning. I can see my Dad, brother and I staring at the TV, me sometimes with a tape recorder in hand so I can listen to the broadcast all week. My Mom and sisters in the other room understanding that tonight was a “boys” night. Guy LaPointe was very much a part of my childhood. I still feel that sense of calm when I see him on the ice, knowing that all will be well. It wasn’t until many years later after reading Ken Dryden s, “The Game” that I really became aware of what a wonderful teammate and sense of humor Guy brought to the team. Guy’s daughter, Stephanie, has been a strong advocate on twitter to have her Dad’s number retired by the Canadiens. She started a petition and website devoted to it. Ive been fortunate to have connect to her there. Her Dad asked her to tone it down, seemingly embarrassed by the movement. Perhaps being a member of such great teams was tribute enough for my hero. It also indicated the love that a devoted daughter had for her Dad. An indication that Guy was every bit a great Dad as he was a hockey player. So tonight Guy gets his well earned and long overdue night among the greats of all time. I’m sure he’s shed a tear or two, a good story or two will be shared as well. I’ll be on my sofa, thinking back to the days of a black and white Zenith and a small tape recorder. Congratulations Guy and from a small boy in Upstate New York, a big Thank you!
