A chunk from my review of Detective Comics #35. Anyone else read this? Please join in the fray: ...In the writing, there is a voice in the interaction between Bruce and Alfred that is reminiscent of the dynamic between Bale and Caines rendition of the two on the big screen. In pencils, there are such amazing cues, like the fact that in the air control tower, the supervisors arms are completely tatted up. Full forearm tattoos. First, who would expect to see that in that kind of character, and second, who would put in the effort to render it? In a similar vein, the radar screen is depicted completely reflected on his face as he leans over the green-and-black screen during a storm; lines tracing across his face and glasses in atmospheric and realistic detail. On colors...damn, man...the colors just make this book. There are lighting reflections in the puddles from car tail lights. There are alternating scenes of dark and lighted (I wont say dark and bright, because there are really no truly bright scenes in the issue). Shadow plays an amazing role in the artwork, and Stewart truly renders a dance between shadow and light that surfaces the somberness of the general mood of fall in Gotham City... ...There are two truly great pages. They are both full splash pages, crafted in excruciating detail, and the first is completely silent. Batmans posture is a bit awkward in the second, but that only takes away from the sum of the parts to a very slight degree. Elsewhere in the book, there is one gaff in the lettering it seems like, where the bubble is rendered as if a character would be yelling, but the letters reveal no excitability from the speaker. It only happens once and is very minor. I hope to see more of this creative team doing more amazing work together. While Detective Comics is not part of my core monthly pull, I am certainly pleased that I took some time for this short detour. To Percy, Leon, Stewart, and Fletcher: Keep em coming, guys.
